The Story Behind the Southern Beaches Swim Centre

by Luke Doerner

As a long-time resident of Southern Beaches, my wife Belinda and I have always been deeply connected to the community. Over the years, we’ve seen how quickly our area has grown, and we’ve witnessed a significant need for a high-quality, local aquatic facility. This is something that’s always been close to my heart, given my background in sports, particularly as a member of the Australian men’s hockey team, The Kookaburras.

Having spent my entire life involved in sports and recreational clubs, the passion to contribute to a community-driven project like this has been part of who I am. After retiring from hockey, I remained committed to sports at various levels, and I knew I could bring my experience to something that could benefit our community in a meaningful way. I’ve completed a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation Management and a Masters in Business Administration, and I’ve poured my expertise into making this vision a reality.

However, the journey has not been easy. Over the past eight years, we’ve faced unprecedented challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic hit just as we were getting some traction with the project, and the impacts of that stretched far beyond anything we anticipated. On top of that, construction costs have more than doubled, making the financial burden even more significant.

The project has been extremely difficult to bring to this point. There were moments when it seemed like the dream might never come to fruition, but my commitment to this community kept me going. I’ve dedicated huge amounts of my time, energy, and personal resources to overcome these obstacles and ensure that the Southern Beaches Swim Centre becomes a reality.

As we look to the future, the Southern Beaches Swim Centre is more than just a pool—it’s a valuable asset to our growing community. The facility will provide a space for fitness, rehabilitation, and swimming education for people of all ages. But it’s also a catalyst for economic growth, drawing visitors from across the region and supporting local businesses. With the increasing demand for services in Southern Beaches, the pool will create jobs, provide ongoing investment in the local economy, and enhance the attractiveness of the area for residence.

This facility represents a vision for the future, one where Southern Beaches continues to thrive and grow, with the health and well-being of our community at the heart of it. The Southern Beaches Swim Centre will offer not only a place for recreation but also serve as a hub for social connection, health, and wellness.

It’s been a long and challenging journey, but one I believe will leave a lasting, positive impact on the community, driving both personal and economic growth for years to come.
